Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita's Personality

They are easily bored and find different ways to entertain themselves if their owners don't interact with them enough. If they are not socialized properly, macaws can become aggressive and can even bite. It is essential to have clear boundaries set to ensure that the macaw does feel threatened.
Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds who enjoy playing, interacting and climb. They need at least 2 to 3 hours a day outside their cages for physical exercise and mental stimulation. They love playing games, learning tricks and listening to music. They also love going to parks and playgrounds as well as hiking and going to local bars and restaurants. In addition to being a fun pet they also make wonderful companions for children.
They can be extremely loud, despite their love for them. They can also be a nuisance for those living nearby. They can make loud, ear-splitting calls and screech-calls which could be a problem in condos and apartments or near children who might be startled by their noise.
Another intriguing characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic, meaning males and females are hard to differentiate. Because of this, the only way to determine sex is via DNA testing. Once the sex of the birds is known and breeding can begin, breeding can commence.
Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets require training to master commands and phrases. This is a long process, and the pet's owner has to be patient and understand that this is a difficult task. Positive reinforcement can help to speed up the process and correct any behavioral issues.
Lolita's care
For years, activists have been pleading for Lolita's retirement from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's reintegration back into the wild, activists and marine biologists believed that Lolita might have a similar fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to return to the sea.
The people who are Lolita's captors – the Dolphin Company - have ignored veterinary advice and continue to put her in danger. They are a danger to her health by forcing Lolita to perform for tourists. They push her to the limit with high-speed circles and head-first diving, which exposes her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. Additionally, they put her in a tiny tank that is less than one-and-a half times the size of her natural habitat.
Fortunately in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her an ancestor and plan to eventually move her to open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen on the west coast of Washington where she could live the rest of her days receiving human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen will be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and be surrounded by the ocean, not a concrete tank.
If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild, killers whales are social animals and are close to their families until they die. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for 40 years. The nation's most active activists, including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network, have called for her departure from Seaquarium's stage, and her eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet

Lolita's Health
While her beauty is unquestionable, Lolita's health continues to decline. Animal welfare groups have expressed concerns about her and want to see that she is released back into the wild. Lolita, who has lived at the Miami Seaquarium in Miami since 1970, has been a tourist attraction for a long time. She has suffered from chronic illnesses and a crippling infection that has left her in a vulnerable condition.
The Dolphin Company, which now is the owner of the Miami Seaquarium and is owned by the Dolphin Company has not provided any information regarding the condition of Lolita. Friends of Toki, a non-profit organization, has published monthly updates on her health and well-being on their website. These updates show that Toki is ageing rapidly and that her health has declined.
Since her captor doesn't have to disclose this information, it's unclear what health issue the orca is suffering from. However, a repository of necropsies taken from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is a major factor in the death of orcas kept in captivity.
Despite the ongoing health issues there is a lot of hope that Lolita may be closer to living in the wild than before. The new owner of the Seaquarium has expressed a commitment to moving the whale out of her tank and into her natural habitat in the Pacific.
After years of public pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary at the sea, where she can swim deep in the water and perhaps be reconnect with her orca mother. These plans were too late to save the whale who died on Friday as a result of what was believed to be a kidney issue.
